United Rentals Joins National Association for Women in Construction

May 19, 2005 — Employing approximately 1,800 women throughout its North American operations, United Rentals, Greenwich, Conn., recently announced that it has become a member of the National Association for Women in Construction (NAWIC).   

"Our company has long valued the role of women in construction, and supports their employment and advancement in our industry,” says Honey Harris, vice president - gulf region for United Rentals. “We understand how important it is to support NAWIC chapter activities at the local level. United Rentals has initiated its membership with employee involvement in a number of local chapters in
North America. We expect the number to grow as word of this opportunity spreads throughout our branch network."

Founded in 1953 by 16 women working in the construction industry, NAWIC originally began as Women in Construction of Fort Worth, Texas. Today, the group has 5,800 members and close to 200 chapters in almost every state in the country as well as two Canadian provinces. Since 1996, NAWIC has seen its impact grow internationally through affiliations with NAWIC-Australia, NAWIC-New Zealand, South African Women in Construction, and most recently, NAWIC-United Kingdom.
