Two new National boom trucks enter receptive market

National's new 600E truck-mounted crane
September 15, 2004National Crane, Waverly, Iowa, has launched a new generation of boom trucks. Improvements to the Series 500E and Series 600E extend beyond increased lift and reach capacities. A number of innovations also make the cranes easier to use and maintain. Customers have already taken delivery of several 500E truck-mounted cranes and orders are pending for the 600E, which will ship soon.

The two-model 500E Series features a number of advantages over other cranes in its class, notably a capacity increase to 18 tons from 16 tons. The 71-foot boom is now the longest in its class, meaning more jobs can be performed without the use of a jib. The boom has a maximum vertical reach of 81 feet, which increases to 121 feet with the jib attached.

The Series 600E is available in five models, each offering a different boom and jib combination. Capacity is set at 20 tons. Maximum boom length is 90 feet. With the jib, vertical reach extends to 140 feet.

The cranes feature a variable displacement hydraulic system which delivers constant pressure control, providing flow on demand to optimize performance. The result is effective multi-function operation, and smooth metering, regardless of load demands. Available oil flow is further optimized by using gravity for ‘lift down' functions.

Standard self-lubricating wear pads help reduce the conditions that can lead to boom ‘chatter.' The A2B system is internal to the boom, eliminating the chance of snagged reel or wire. A Hydraulic Capacity Alert (HCA) system is also standard. Available as a new option to reduce flex on the truck frame is an integral steel torsion box.

Operators can adjust the swing motor brake release valve to their speed preference. A speedy reeve boom tip makes rigging changes easier, while a ‘burst-of-speed' winch can quickly payout and pickup cable.

Several new features are aimed at improving serviceability. A removable winch allows the internal telescoping cylinder to be removed without dismantling the boom. Bearings and cables inside the boom can be easily greased via strategically placed service access holes in the boom side plates.
