Crane Hot Line

Tipover Del Rio, Texas

April 2015 –Two employees of the United States Section of the International Boundary and Water Commission, United States and Mexico (USIBWC), fell into the water and were missing at Amistad Dam. The two mechanics were pressure-washing a gate from inside a personnel basket attached to a crane at the top of the dam. The crane was lowering the workers when it tipped, causing the basket to fall into the 25- to 30-ft. deep water. Swimmers were unable to reach the basket, and divers were not able to enter the water because of safety concerns related to the crane. The USIBWC, investigating the accident, suspended all agency crane operations until the accident cause is determined. - USIBWC
