October 20, 2004 • Terex Cranes, Wilmington, N.C., introduces the newest addition to its Terex-Demag all-terrain crane product line, the AC140. This 170-ton AT crane, with 115,000-pound GVW and a five-axle carrier, was designed specifically with cost-effective roadability in mind. With some features borrowed and others brand new, this machine is sure to take the road•and off-road jobs•by storm.

Superstructure

Main features of the upper structure include a 197-foot, six-section main boom with a 56-foot swing-away jib, outrigger control from upper cab, and an 86,000-pound divisible counterweight. The hydraulic system is made of two variable displacement axial piston pumps with automatic power control enabling the operator to engage four independent movements working simultaneous and a separate pump for slewing. A hydraulic oil cooler is included as standard. The AC140's 174-hp water-cooled, four-cylinder DaimlerChrysler upper engine and hydraulic system are borrowed from the 200-ton AC160-1 all-terrain crane.

Safety devices include an electronic safe load indicator with graphic display and touch screen. Digital readout is provided for hook load, rated load, boom length and angle, and radius. The safe load indicator also presents monitoring codes to assist in troubleshooting. An analog display on the load indicator is used to indicate the percent of capacity utilization, an integrated control system for boom telescoping, and a display for duty charts and theoretical and actual outrigger loading. Working range limitation to predefined slew angles, heights, and radii is standard equipment.

For operator comfort, this machine's crane cab has a sliding door, roof window, and hinged windscreen. Safety glass is used throughout and the windows are equipped with wipers. Climate control is provided via a self-contained hot water heater and heat flow control and air conditioning. The cab also can be hydraulically tilted back 18°.

Carrier

The AC140's main carrier is identical to the AC160-1 and features a 9'10” width and 8-foot axle spacing between 1-2 and 3-4. Axles 1, 2, 4, and 5 are steering axles, and 2, 3, 4, and 5 are driving axles. Transverse differential lockout control is available on axles 2, 3, 4 and 5, and longitudinal lockout control is on axles 3 and 4. All 10 wheels are fitted with 14.00 R25 Michelin or Bridgestone tires. A water-cooled, eight-cylinder, 510-hp DaimlerChrysler diesel engine powers the carrier.
