Tadano Introduces Lift Adjuster to Reduce Load Sway

February 2, 2005—Even with the use of high tensile steel in boom designs, many crane operators still notice considerable boom deflection when lifting heavy loads. Addressing this issue, Tadano Ltd. has developed a control system to compensate for boom deflection.

The Lift Adjuster accounts for deflection when the boom is under load by automatically extending the boom elevation cylinder to reduce the load radius. This action compensates for the increased load radius caused by the load-induced boom deflection. As a result, operators will experience considerably less load sway as the load is picked up and the boom telescoped. For example, a load weighing about 24 tons will sway less than 10 inches when lifted by a crane with the boom extended 196 feet. Without the Lift Adjuster, load sway in this example would exceed 13 feet. (To view a video clip showing the Lift Adjuster in action, go to the link under the image.)

The Lift Adjuster is actuated through the crane's Automatic Moment Limiter (AML). Once turned on, the operator uses single-lever control for hoisting the load.

The Lift Adjuster will first be seen in North America on the ATF2000GXL, a new 200-ton all-terrain crane, to be introduced at ConExpo in Las Vegas, Nev., in March.

The control system was introduced at last year's Bauma show in Germany on the ATF160G-5 160-metric ton all-terrain crane.
