November 3, 2004 • It will be three years at ConExpo since the Manitowoc Crane Group announced it was acquiring Grove Worldwide, Shady Grove, Pa. At the time, Grove introduced its largest rough-terrain crane to date • the 130-ton capacity RT9000E. At ConExpo 2005, Grove will introduce another round of innovative products for the U.S. market, including the 165-ton capacity GMK5165 all-terrain crane.

The GMK5165 is the North American counterpart to the GMK5130-1 all-terrain crane made for the European market, and it's the first Grove all-terrain crane to

feature the newly redesigned Megaform™ boom. This 42- to 197-foot, six-section full power boom with the Twin-Lock™ pinning system uses stronger materials but weighs less than the previous Megaform boom design. As a result of its lowered weight, the GMK5165's total GVW is 109,000 pounds, which is virtually the same as the smaller GMK5120B.

Other features of the GMK5165 include a 36- to 59-foot bi-fold lattice swingaway extension that is hydraulically offsetable 0° to 40°. The load moment and anti-two-block systems provides audio and visual warnings and control lever lockout that electronically displays boom angle, length, radius, tip height, relative load moment, and more. Using CANbus, the crane controls are integrated with the LMI and engine management system.

Counterweight on the GMK5165 is 88,000 pounds and consists of various sections with a hydraulic installation and removal system, which is controlled from the superstructure cab. The hydraulic system is made up of two separate circuits and one load sensing, axial piston variable displacement pump with electronic power limiting control and one gear pump for swing. A four-cylinder, turbocharged Mercedes-Benz OM 904 LA water-cooled diesel engine powers the upper structure.

The carrier features five axles with planetary hub reduction and center-mounted differential gearing, and it uses MEGATRAK suspension and an independent hydro-pneumatic system that acts on all wheels with hydraulic lockout. The GMK5165 is powered by an eight-cylinder, turbocharged Mercedes-Benz OM 502 LA water-cooled diesel engine and a 16-speed DaimlerChrysler transmission. Maximum travel speed is 53 mph.
