Second Accident at Maumee River Crossing Attributed to Wiring Error

November 10, 2004—A spokesperson for Fru-Con, Inc., the Ballwin, Mo.-based contractor on the high-profile I-280 interchange reconstruction project in Toledo, Ohio, recently confirmed that wires in a device controlling up or down movement of a telescoping support leg on the crane were somehow reversed during maintenance.

As a crane operator tried to lower one of the telescopic legs, the miswired controller instead caused the winch to try to raise the leg farther than it could. The cable attached to the leg overloaded and snapped. No one was injured in the October 23rd accident. Source: The Toledo Blade
