Sarens Unveils Huge New Crane

October 25, 2017 - Belgian crane company Sarens has introduced its new super heavy-lift crane, the SGC-140. The new model can lift 2,820 metric tons at a 50-meter radius on 118m to 130m of boom.
Sarens reports that it developed the huge new crane because clients were asking for cranes so large that it could not buy one to meet their requirements.
The SGC-140’s 2,820-tonne lifting capacity at 50 meters makes it one of the world’s highest-capacity cranes, says Sarens.
It joins three other models in the Sarens Giant Crane (SGC) family: the SGC-90, SGC-120, and SGC-250. The SGC-140 is similar to the SGC-120, and will work on many of the same kinds of projects, but the SCG-140 can lift 45% more than the SGC-120 at a 120-meter radius.
The SGC-140’s circular base is 44 meters in diameter. It consists of 64 steel mats, a circular double-rail roller ring, 64 front bogie wheels, and 32 rear bogie wheels.
The machinery deck is equipped with six power packs, each housing with two 260-kW Caterpillar diesel engines, plus up to eight winches, 4,000 tonnes of counterweight (40 boxes), and the operator’s cab.
Assembly takes six weeks and two cranes to complete.
This first SGC-140 is initially set up with four 40-tonne main-hoist winches each holding 1,300m of 50mm rope, and two 40-tonne boom-hoist winches, each with 2,100m of 50mm rope. Maximum line pull is 600 kN.
Maximum ground pressure is 25 tonnes/square meter.
The crane can operate in winds to 22.4 meters per second, and can withstand wind to 56 meters per second when parked.
Sarens says that the SGC-140 features improvements over previous SCG models. The upgrades include a reinforced boom, a reinforced mast, an upgraded boom hoist, improved winches and power packs, and a new rail-and-bogie design.
Its offers boom configurations of 89m, 118m, and 130m, plus jib lengths of 40.5m, 64.1m, 87.7m, and 99.5m.
The hook block is manufactured by Ropeblock. It weighs 102 tonnes, and can handle up to 3,200 tonnes. Its 30 sheaves enable reeving up to 60 parts of line (10 parts per winch when the crane is equipped with its maximum of six load-hoist winches). The block can be used with two, four, or six winches, and its sheaves use dry graphite lubrication for low maintenance. The twin swiveling ramshorn hooks can swing 60° laterally, and their design improves sling life. Reeveguards for the patented Superreeve connector socket increase rigging speed.
The SGC-140’s first job will be working on the TCO oil-refinery-expansion project in Kazakhstan. The TCO project is the largest contract in Saren’s 62-year history.
