Crane Hot Line

Rochester, N.Y.

The operator, rescued from a 35-ton rough-terrain crane that tipped onto its side in the Genesee River gorge, died from his injuries. The man was in the process of moving the crane from one side of the spillway to the other when the crane tipped on a sloped concrete surface. He was moving large concrete wedges, in place to keep the crane level, to create a travel path to the other side of the water. Rescuers spent two hours cribbing the crane with jacks and reinforced timber, in order to extricate the operator. Although the operator was conscious and talking with rescue workers, he died as the crane was being lifted off of him. OSHA and the State department of labor were to investigate. - democratandchronicle.com
