October 6, 2004 • Perkins Engines, Griffin, Ga., launches its range of Tier 3/Stage 3a engines to meet January 1, 2005, emission standards. The new 4- and 6-cylinder 1100D Series features a range of mechanical and electronic engines. Electronic engines are based on Caterpillar's ACERT Technology, which employs a precisely controlled, multiple fuel injection strategy to reduce NOx and hydrocarbon levels. To meet OEM market needs, Perkins also will be introducing enhanced mechanical fuel system combustion technology to achieve tailored solutions for lower horsepower variants.

ACERT Technology boosts engine performance by adding up to 43 percent more power and 51 percent more torque throughout its engine range. Additionally, extended power thresholds with ratings between 250-330 hp are in the works for 2006 legislation. Despite increased power, fuel tolerance also is increased, permitting the use of lower lubricity fuels and a wider range of fuel types. OEMs facing noise legislation will benefit from the ACERT Technology's lower bare engine noise and improved noise at idle. For easy service, the new engines feature multi-vee belts and service cylinder liners to lessen time spent tensioning and reboring cylinders. For more information, go to www.perkins.com.
