December 26, 2005 — Introduced at ConExpo this year in Las Vegas, the 440-ton (U.S.) Manitowoc Model 16000 crawler crane fills a capacity gap in the Manitowoc lineup — between the 300-ton (U.S.) Model 2250 and 825-ton (U.S.) Model 18000. One of the first companies to take delivery of new crane is Ohio-based All Erection and Crane Rental, which purchased four units — the first of which has already been put to work on wind turbine installation jobs in Kansas.
The Model 16000 features an optional pin-on upper boom point, with a capacity of 99 tons (U.S.), designed for setting wind towers. The 16000's basic boom provides 98 feet of reach, which can be enhanced with a luffing jib on boom lengths between 78 feet and 275 feet. The maximum main boom available is 315 feet, while the maximum allowable combination of main boom and luffing jib is 433 feet. Capacity with the luffing jib is 165 tons (U.S.).
Manitowoc also offers its capacity-enhancing MAX-ER attachment for this unit, which eliminates the time and expense of transporting and setting up a larger crane by offering additional lift and reach capabilities. The system retains the crane's operational abilities while carrying any load within its rated capacity. The MAX-ER attachment can increase the Model 16000's maximum boom length to 394 feet.
The Model 16000 boasts a line pull of 17.4 tons (U.S.) and hoist speeds of up to 697 ft per minute on the main drum. Inside the cab, new EPIC dual LCD color monitors display important operational information through easy-to-read graphics, such as radius, boom position, and load-moment conditions.
