September 8, 2005 — Bordering on the Elbow River Valley basin in southwest Calgary, Alberta, the Wedgewood Chateaus at New Discovery offers unobstructed views of the western foothills and Rocky Mountains. Nestled in the 1,000-acre Griffith Woods park, the five-story condominium complex is constructed of steel and concrete. According to homebuilder the Statesman Group, steel framing is a relatively new advancement for residential construction, and the company researched and elected to use steel framing with concrete floors as a “green” efficient material and ideal architecture for the Chateau complexes at the Wedgewoods of New Discovery.

During the complex's construction, Statesman relied on the Surrey, British Columbia-based Mega Cranes' FM Gru RB1035N self-erecting cranes during its construction, which first procured its self-erecting cranes in 2002 for its rental fleet. The FM Gru RB1035N features a tip capacity of 2,200 pounds with a jib reach of 115 feet with maximum lift at 8,800 pounds. The jib can be raised to a 20° luff position for increased lifting height.

Trolley and slewing functions are controlled by state-of-the-art electronic inverters. All cranes come standard with three speed controls. Winch, trolley, and slewing have a working design of 250,000 hoisting cycles. A radio remote control allows the operator on the ground to control the movements of the loads and to watch exactly where the load is to be placed.

This crane is fast to erect or dismantle on-site, cost-effective, and compact and easy to transport. The RB1035N is ideal for smaller sites with limited space. Rapid assembly and erection ensure maximum uptime, while compact dimensions and short rear slewing radius allow the crane to be set up in close proximity to structures. Self-erecting cranes can be erected in half a day, and they are powered by 480 VAC three-phase transformer on-site or by a generator.
