April 6, 2005 — Link-Belt Construction Equipment Co., Lexington, Ky., introduced eight new cranes at ConExpo, including the 90-ton HTC-8690 and HTT-8690 truck cranes. Introduced in late 2004, the HTC-8690  features a 140-foot five-section boom, which uses a patented Link-Belt design for a simple and reliable locking and latching system. Maximum tip height is 237 feet with the additional two 16-foot lattice inserts that can be installed between the boom head and the optional 35- to 58-foot bi-folding lattice. All the attachment combinations have offset positions of 2°, 15°, 30°, and 45°.

The HTC-8690 offers a new cab that's not only bigger and wider but also has an expanded front glass for operator viewing from the six-way adjustable seat. A choice between single- or dual-axis joystick controllers along with the 540 Microguard rated capacity limiter and optional air conditioning make crane operations smooth and effortless.

Standard modular-style counterweight package is 11,500 pounds, and optional counterweights are 26,500, 32,500, and 39,500 pounds. For highway travel, each counterweight package is easily moved to optimize the weight balance between the front and rear axles. The system to raise and lower the counterweight is totally controlled from the operator's cab. Air-ride suspension is standard on both the front and rear axles of the HTC-8690, allowing jobsite travel will all 39,500 pounds of counterweight.

Powering the HTC-8690 is the 445-hp Detroit Diesel Series 60 12.7-liter engine with 1,450 foot-pounds of torque, and it's coupled to ZF's AS-tronic automated transmission with 12 forward and two reverse speeds, which provides the benefits of a manual transmission without a clutch pedal.

The winches deliver 16,880 pounds of line pull and 480 fpm line speed. Spooled onto the winch drum is 0.75-inch diameter rotation resistant wire rope.

With the addition of rear steering, the HTC-8690 becomes the HTT-8690 hydraulic truck terrain crane. Four modes of steering available: independent front, independent rear, all-wheel coordinated, and crab steer. Utilizing the rear steer option, the turning radius is significantly reduced for optimum maneuverability.

The HTT product line includes standard 445/65R22.5 single tubeless radial tires and hub piloted aluminum disc wheels on the front and rear. Tires are interchangeable between front and rear as HTT crane models use single tires on the rear axles.
