March 23, 2005 • Liebherr Cranes Inc., Newport News, Va., showed a new three-axle all-terrain crane for the North American market at ConExpo last week. The compact LTC 1055-3.1 is hydrostatically driven with one cab for road and crane operation. It was specially developed for indoor, industrial applications.

Rated at 55 metric tons (60.63 short tons), the LTC 1055-3.1 is roadable at 26,400-pound axle load. The crane's 79,200-pound gross weight, includes 9,700 pounds of ballast and a 26-foot folding fly jib. An additional 13,200 pounds of ballast is available to significantly increase lifting capacity.

The 118-foot telescopic boom consists of seven elements pinned together hydro-mechanically. A short erecting jib with a maximum 57,200-pound lifting capacity is integrated into the folding fly jib. Three 8-foot long intermediate sections, which can be transported on the crane, extend the fly jib to 49 feet achieving overall boom and jib length of 162 feet. No assist equipment is required to install the intermediate jib sections.

A Liebherr turbocharged diesel engine supplies the power for travel and crane operations. It produces an output of 460 hp at 1,900 RPM The maximum torque of 1,549 lb-ft (2,100 Nm) is achieved at 900 • 1.300 min-1. The hydrostatic travel drive, with the diesel engine mounted on the crane superstructure, contribute to crane's compact size. The crane's overall length is 27'6“ and it's width is 8'4“.

Thanks to the speed-dependent active rear axle steering with programs for road travel and construction-site operation, the compact crane can be moved with ease to its working position even in extremely confined space conditions. The fully automatic, hydrostatic driveline has three closed hydraulic circuits. All three axles are permanently driven in the travel mode. The driver-engaged off-road range increases the maximum gradient to 50%.

Other new Liebherr all-terrain cranes on display were the LTM 1095-5.1 and the LTM 1070-4.1. The LTM 1070-4.1 replaces the LTM 1060/2. It features a 26-foot longer boom at 164 feet. In addition, load capacity was increased by 10% on average, achieving up to 30% more capacity in some radius ranges. Go to www.liebherr.com for information.
