Konecranes Strengthens Climate Commitment With Science-Based Net-Zero Targets

Konecranes has committed to setting science-based, long-term net-zero targets, marking an expansion of its climate goals. This commitment builds upon the company’s established near-term targets, which were approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in 2022.

Konecranes has pledged to halve its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, based on 2019 levels, and to reduce Scope 3 emissions from purchased goods and services, as well as emissions from the use of its products, by 50% by the same year.

The company achieved its Scope 1 and 2 reduction targets in 2022, eight years ahead of schedule, and has already made a 19% reduction in Scope 3 emissions as of 2023.

Over the next 24 months, Konecranes plans to develop and submit its long-term net-zero goals to SBTi for approval, aiming for full decarbonization across its operations and value chain before 2050.

“To date, many capital goods companies have set science-based near-term targets, but far fewer have taken the next step of making a long-term commitment,” Konecranes President and CEO Anders Svensson said.

“By committing to setting the long-term target of net-zero emissions before 2050, we are underlining our commitment to be a leader in our climate work, and part of the solution for the climate crisis. Major transformation is required throughout all industries to reach net-zero.”

“So far, Konecranes has progressed well on its decarbonization journey – reaching the near-term Scope 1 and 2 science-based target eight years ahead of schedule shows that we are on the right path,” Anniina Virta-Toikka, vice president, Sustainability at Konecranes said.

“We’re ready to challenge ourselves again and, given our Scope 3 commitment, also are challenging our customers and suppliers to do the same.”

Konecranes’ decarbonization plan is part of its broader sustainability vision, which includes fostering a circular economy, advancing safety and security in material handling, promoting inclusivity and diversity and upholding ethical standards across its supply chain.

With ongoing investments in digitalization and technology, Konecranes aims to streamline material flows while reducing emissions and enhancing safety, strengthening its position as a leader in sustainable material handling solutions.
