Groves new AT crane, the GMK4080-1, will be launched in January in the U.S. as the GMK4100.
December 21, 2005 — In January, Grove is launching a new all-terrain crane, the GMK4080-1, which will be known as the GMK4100 in the United States. A number of GMK4080-1s have already been ordered — with the first two headed for a German haulage firm.

“The four-axle AT market is a busy one and, as always, we respond to market needs with continuous product development,” said Philippe Cohet, executive vice president of Manitowoc Crane Group's EMEA region. “The GMK4080-1 is very versatile, with compact dimensions, and is complemented with an excellent lifting chart and impressive reach. It is suitable for a variety of tasks, and will undoubtedly prove popular in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region and beyond.”

This new four-axle 100-ton (U.S.) GMK4080-1 has a six-section TWIN-LOCK boom, with new MEGAFORM shaping first seen on the GMK5165-1, launched last year. Powerful lifting capabilities allow the GMK4080-1 to lift 7.3 tons (U.S.) at a radius of 65.6 feet with its boom extended to its maximum of 167 feet. With hydraulic luffing jib and 19.7-foot extension, the crane has a maximum tip height of 246 feet.

As with most new Grove AT cranes, the GMK4080-1 is configurable in both “Taxi” and “Maxi” modes. In Taxi mode, the crane remains within 13.2 tons (U.S.) per axle while fitted with 10.2-ton (U.S.) counterweight, a 49.2-foot hydraulic swingaway, a 17.6-ton (U.S.) hook block and driving on 16.00 R25 tires. The GMK4080-1's Maxi configuration offers increased capabilities, thanks to an extra 19.7-foot hydraulic swingaway insert (which increases the maximum jib to 68.9 feet and a counterweight offering of up to 21.2 tons).

The GMK4080-1 will replace Grove's existing four-axle unit, the GMK4075-1, but it retains a number of design features of the popular model. The new GMK4080-1 features a driveline modified from the older model, including the same ZF ASTRONIC transmission and 389-hp Mercedes-Benz OM 501 LA engine. However, the GMK4080-1 includes a two-step transfer case, to allow better agility at lower speeds.

The dimensions of the GMK4080-1 show a front overhang of only 5.9 feet, making it 10.3 inches shorter than the GMK4075-1. Total length, meanwhile, is 43 feet, making the GMK4080-1 is shorter than its predecessor by 10.4 inches.

The GMK4080-1 also offers eight different counterweight options, ranging from 2 tons (U.S.) to the maximum of 21.2 tons (U.S.). The crane's air-conditioned VISION cab is tiltable to an incline of 20º, and its multi-function remote control allows for convenient operation of the outriggers and swingaway jib. Other standard features include all-wheel drive and steer, MEGATRAK suspension, Grove's ECOS operating system, and an EKS5 Light, load moment indicator.
