A new Grove GCD25 carrydeck crane has helped ensure months of water fun for kids at Camp Joy El in Greencastle, Pennsylvania. Stephenson Equipment rented out the crane for a two-day operation to lift and install an 800-pound water wheel at the camp’s splash pad.
Given the wheel part’s unusual cylindrical shape, one of the most challenging aspects of the project involved locating the correct sling alignment and balancing the load as it was placed on the steel pipe structure. The lift required precise handling to both a height and radius of nearly 20 feet.
Stephenson Equipment and Manitowoc, the manufacturer of Grove carrydeck cranes, provided onsite support during the lift.
The GCD25, at 45,465 pounds, is the lightest carrydeck crane in its class. It boasts a 25-ton capacity and a 71-foot boom and can be fitted with an optional 17-foot boom extension. The crane features four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering capability, and flexible setup with multiple outrigger positions and a three-position, mechanically offset pivoting boom for working in confined spaces.
Operator-focused features of the GCD25 include a split cab door with sliding glass windows, a full LED lighting package for improved visibility, and the manufacturer’s rated capacity limiter system. In addition, the crane has storage for rigging equipment, small tools and equipment.
With its lightweight design and maneuverability, simplicity and speed in both setup and teardown, and its suitability for soft ground, the GCD25 got high marks from its operator. “The GCD25 surpassed our expectations during the water wheel installation at Camp Joy El,” said Matt Knoll, sales rep at Stephenson Equipment. “Its integrated counterweight and boom size make it efficient and dependable.”
