Giant Crane Makes Big Lifts from One Location

July 10, 2018 - Mammoet has strategically placed a giant Liebherr LR 13000 lattice-boom crawler crane to complete several lifts from single location.

The huge crane’s ability to pick and place large components from a single spot is making the project’s lifting process more efficient.

The LR 13000 is designed to lift up to 6.6 million pounds (3,000 metric tons), offer hoisting heights to 803 ft., and reach out to a maximum radius of 656 ft.

On this job, Mammoet used one LR 13000 to safely install two reactors in a Gulf Coast polypropylene plant undergoing an expansion. In mid July, the crane will place more large components while working from the same location. Its reach and capacity are saving time and space for other work taking place within the plant.

To set the two reactors, the LR 13000 was equipped with 315 ft. of boom and configured with its derrick and suspended ballast attachment. On that boom length and configuration, the crane can lift up to 1,500 tons.

The smaller of the two reactors weighed 500 tons. The larger reactor weighed 750 tons, stood 160’9” tall, and was set at a radius of 110 ft.

One of Mammoet’s Demag CC2800 crawler cranes worked as a tailing crane during both reactor lifts.

The LR 13000’s high capacity will let it make the upcoming mid-July lifts from the same location. For those lifts, the crane will be equipped with 315 ft. of boom plus 236 ft. of jib (551 ft., total).

Scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2020, the expansion will increase the polypropylene plant’s production capacity by 450,000 tons per year.
