Genie's GS-68 RT Drive System Takes on Extreme Environments
November 23, 2005 — Genie Industries, Redmond, Wash., recently introduced a new traction control drive system for its popular GS-68 RT series of rough terrain scissor lifts. Developed in response to customer requests for increased traction control, the new system allows operators to take on tough environments.
“Our customers, especially those in the Northeast, face some pretty severe conditions,” said John Norton, Genie product manager. “Depending on the season, they can be up to their ankles in mud, knee deep in snow, or covered with ice. So when we set out to improve the traction on our 68-ft lifts, we knew we had to take it one wheel at a time.”
To achieve a true "traction control" drive system, Genie added combiner divider valves to divide and isolate hydraulic flow to each wheel, allowing each wheel to work independently and transferring maximum power to the ground — even when one or more wheels lose contact. With the new design, should one tire lose contact with the ground, the unit will maintain 75% of its power.
The new traction control drive system features exceptional gradeability, giving operators access to sites with 35% to 40% slope rating. Two drive modes provide ultimate control and maneuverability.
“Operators can choose ‘Series Mode' when they're on flat or level paths, driving at higher speeds and requiring less torque,” Norton said. “The ‘Parallel Mode' is ideal for traveling up hill at slower speeds with maximum torque. Also featured is a new hydraulic dynamic braking system in addition to our standard spring-applied hydraulic release parking brake. The result is smoother control, particularly on rough terrain, less wear and tear, and greater operator confidence."
As of September 26, 2005, all new GS-68 Rough Terrain Scissor Lifts included the new drive system and available in both gas and diesel models.
