Crane Hot Line

Crane Accident: Stratford, Conn.

April 2012—A crane used in building an access road next to a bridge construction site tipped over, injuring the operator. The rubber-tired, telescopic-boom crane tipped onto its side, and its boom tore into a nearby marina’s service center. The extent of the crane operator's injuries is unknown, although witnesses said the worker appeared to be more shaken up than seriously injured. A state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection spokeswoman said about 15 gallons of hydraulic fluid spilled from the crane’s 100-gallon reservoir, but that none reached the nearby Housatonic River before being cleaned up. Investigators are looking into what led to the accident. This is the second crane accident this year near the construction site. In January, a crane tipped over while being loaded onto a trailer. – www.newstimes.com
