Completion Date for Ohio Bridge Pushed Back
September 15, 2004 - The Toledo Blade recently reported that construction delays of the I-280 Maumee River Crossing following the deadly crane collapse on Feb. 16 have pushed back the bridge's expected completion date. The Ohio Department of Transportation had planned to complete the $220 million structure by late 2006, but they recently postponed it to early 2007. Before bridge construction can resume Fru-Con Construction will have to finish modifying a second crane to improve its stability. Then, OSHA and various labor unions with members on-site will need to sign off on resuming work with the crane.
Fru-Con expected to finish the bridge by August 2005 before the accident, which killed four construction workers, injured four others, and destroyed one of two 900-ton horizontal cranes used to hoist and hold pre-cast concrete bridge sections in place during assembly. OSHA faulted Fru-Con for the accident for not securing the crane's legs in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications. Fru-Con has appealed the finding and $280,000 fine proposed by OSHA.
