The C6.6 has 10% more displacement in the same size envelope of its predecessor.

April 6, 2005 -- Introduced at ConExpo and entering in production in mid-2005, the C6.6 industrial engine is the smallest engine in the ACERT® Technology product line, manufactured by Peoria, Ill.-based Caterpillar. The C6.6 has 10% more displacement in the same size envelope of its predecessor, the 3056E, and it is rated from 119 to 250 hp. Maximum torque at 1,400 rpm is 728 foot-pounds. The C6.6 is available only with an air-to-air charge cooled turbocharger; no naturally aspirated model is planned.

Compared to the Tier 2 compliant 3056E, the C6.6 is Tier 3/Stage IIIa compliant and will later be Tier 4/Stage IIIb compliant with the addition of an after-treatment exhaust system. The key to Tier 3/Stage IIIa compliance is the use of ACERT Technology, which has no increase in heat rejection to the coolant and maintains a 500-hour recommended service interval (1000-hour interval as an option) while keeping the same package size and same mounting points as the 3056E.

The C6.6 also has increased fuel tolerance, accepting both kerosene and jet A. Cross-flow heads with four valves per cylinder and full authority electronics are important features of ACERT Technology. Through an industry-standard J1939 connector, the C6.6 can integrate with other machine systems through a CANbus, which will enable such benefits as improved diagnostics, cruise control, and throttle override by the hydraulic system or transmission. The C6.6 also includes the hydraulically actuated electronically controlled unit injectors to improve combustion characteristics and reduce exhaust emissions and noise. Engine noise is further reduced through the use of a structural sump, a new engine block, and a new gear train.

Ratings for the C32 engine are 860 to 1,300 hp at 2100 rpm.
Caterpillar also announced the release of its C32 engine, which will go into production in July. Ratings are 860 to 1,300 hp at 2100 rpm, and a 1,500-hp version will be available for use below 700-meter altitude. Intended to replace Caterpillar's 3508B engine, the C32 has several improvements specific to ACERT Technology, including an MEUI fuel system, cross-flow heads with high cam position, and Caterpillar's ADEMTM A4 engine control module with increased memory and a faster processor, as well as the cross-bolted main bearing caps. Oil change intervals are set at 500 hours. The C32 weighs 5,368 pounds, more than 3,000 pounds less than the 3508B. Go to www.cat.com for more information.
