October 20, 2004 • Caterpillar, Peoria, Ill., introduces the TH580B telescopic handler, the largest in the B-Series product line. The TH580B is designed to work productively and cost effectively in general construction, heavy construction, and industrial applications.

This new machine features a four-section boom that enables it to lift loads as high as 56 feet and reach up to 42 feet forward, giving operators at least 20 percent more reach both up and out than its sister machine, the TH560B. The TH580B has a rated load capacity of 11,000 pounds and an operating weight of 27,465 pounds. It also offers three steering modes — two-wheel, crab, and circle — for maneuvering in tight spaces. Newly designed stabilizers offer ±5° of leveling, and a frame leveling system gives ±10° of leveling capability. It also comes equipped with either a canopy or an enclosed cab.

The TH580B's electro-hydraulic joystick allows three boom functions to operate simultaneously for precise load placement. The joystick also operates the auxiliary hydraulic function and allows the option of a second auxiliary service for using work tools that require more than one hydraulic power source. A fully adjustable standard suspension seat is standard, and an air suspension seat is optional.

Powering the TH580B is the 120-hp Cat 3054E engine, which provides high-torque and low emissions. The new cooling system is driven directly from the engine through the transmission, and it does not require an additional hydraulic pump or related lines. Clean air is pulled from outside the machine through the forward-facing, fully screened cooling pack.

The powersyncro transmission has four speeds forward and three reverse for travel speeds up to 20 miles per hour. Its mounting design eliminates the need for a separate transfer box. Oil-immersed disc brakes are equipped on the front axle, and an optional differential lock is available for improved traction when needed.

An integrated tool-carrier front is standard on the TH580B. The hydraulic quick coupler allows the operator to change non-hydraulic tools from inside the cab. Auxiliary hydraulic service at the boom head is available to operate hydraulic work tools. New work tools include a material-handling arm, a universal standard carriage, and a side-shift carriage. Other options include a rear tow hitch, multiple tire choices, and a lighting package for the boom and cab.

Daily maintenance has been reduced to checking fluid levels and performing a quick walk-around inspection. Routine lubrication and engine oil and filter changes are now required at 500 hours, rather than 250. The combined hydraulic and transmission filter change interval has been extended to 1,000 hours. All service points are readily accessible, and major components are easy to reach at ground level.
