October 19, 2005 — Lightly loaded winches often receive unnecessary major inspections, which wastes maintenance dollars, while heavily loaded winches may not be inspected often enough, increasing the possibility of failure. To overcome these challenges, the Braden Electronic Winch Monitoring System, introduced at ICUEE by Paccar Winch Division, Broken Arrow, Okla., provides data to plan a crane winch's preventive maintenance based on the actual winch duty cycle.
Operating on 12VDC with battery back-up, the Electronic Maintenance Module (EMM) records the winch duty cycle, operating hours in compliance with API specifications, and the total hours of winch usage and drum turning — not just engine hours. Recorded data is then downloaded to a laptop or shown on an optional display. Information for up to three winches is accessible on the optional display unit. The EMM can be easily adapted to existing Braden Winches.
Winch service history codes can be stored indefinitely and only accessed with individual access codes. Key winch information, such as serial number, model number, ratio, motor size, usage, and service history, can not be tampered with. API brake tests can be conducted from the operator's station and are automatically recorded with the optional brake test kit.
