March 23, 2005 • Altec Industries, Inc., Birmingham, Ala., introduced at ConExpo the fourth in its new series of boom trucks, first launched in early 2004. A prototype of the AC17-70, a 17-ton truck-mounted crane with 70-foot telescopic boom, was on display. This unit, which is already in production, will be available for delivery later this year.

The AC17-70 will share many features common to the series, including Altec's Load Moment and Area Protection (LMAP) System as standard equipment. The system includes a rated capacity limiter; displays boom length, angle, load on hook, and percent of rated capacity; includes electronic working area definition; and operator audible alarms.

Integration of standard safety features was a top concern in designing this product line, explained David Hill, director of marketing services. In addition to the LMAP system, Altec provides an outrigger boom interlock system which prevents boom operation if all outriggers are not set. Hill explained that it's all too common for boom truck operators to extend outriggers on just one side of the crane, which can result in tip over accidents.

In order to reduce the chance for crushing injuries, Altec has positioned the outrigger controls at the back of the truck instead of along the side. In addition, an outrigger motion alarm sounds a warning for people working nearby.

Other cranes in the series include the AC26-103, introduced in the third quarter of 2004, the AC35-127, and the AC38-103.

Altec cranes are distributed by Custom Truck Sales, Kansas City, Mo., and are supported by more than 20 service centers and 115 mobile service technicians across the United States and Canada. For information go to www.altec.com or www.ctsll.com.
