Ahern Rentals Puts Software Mentoring Strategy to Work
January 17, 2006 • According to a recent edition of ARA's RentalPulse newsletter, Las Vegas-based Ahern Rentals has purchased TotalLMS, TotalCollaboration, and TotalAccess • all knowledge management software applications produced by SumTotal Systems, Mountain View, Calif.
"We're seeing a tremendous rate of growth in our industry, and to stay ahead of that curve we need to bring skilled labor and mechanics up to speed quickly on our equipment and processes," said Shane Stigler, director of information technology for Ahern Rentals. "If we had to rely solely on our on-the-job mentoring program for training new mechanics, then we'd not only slow down the pace at which our most experienced staff were working but also create a bottleneck for bringing new hires on board. SumTotal is critical to our mission to grow our business."
Ahern will use SumTotal's learning management system (LMS) to enhance its current mentoring program. The LMS, which delivers, tracks, and analyzes targeted learning over the Internet, will ensure that new hires at each site are brought up to speed on Ahern's equipment in the same way. "We also want to lift some of the burden of training off the shoulders of our experienced mechanics, so we're looking to SumTotal's TotalCollaboration product to help us capture what our experts know, organize it and share it with new hires," Stigler added.
